About the Inner West
The Inner West - Newtown, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Balmain, Burwood, Strathfield - is Victorian and Federation terrace country with tight street frontages, historic brickwork, and mostly flat blocks. Heritage conservation areas cover much of the suburb cluster.
Brick fences
Brick fences in the Inner West.
Existing low front fences in face brick or render are the norm here. Restoration and matching-style new builds are the bulk of the work: getting the right reds, salmon pinks or browns of period brickwork, the right pointing, and pier proportions that fit the terrace rhythm. Styling decisions are constrained but for good reason.

Retaining walls
Retaining walls in the Inner West.
Retaining work is concentrated on lots that step down to laneways or where landscape design calls for terraced gardens. Concrete block walls with rendered or painted finishes that match the Victorian and Federation brickwork are typical. The shorter wall heights mean engineering is less universal than the harbourside or coastal suburbs.
